The Republican Central Committees of Caroline, Cecil, Kent and Queen Anne's Counties have announced the procedure for filling the vacancy for District 36 in the Maryland Senate created by the recent resignation of Sen. E.J. Pipkin. "Senator Pipkin's resignation leaves us with big shoes to fill in the Maryland Senate. We wish him great success on his future endeavors," said Rob Willoughby, Chair of the Caroline County Republican Central Committee.
Article III, Section 13 of The Constitution of Maryland prescribes that the Republican Central Committees of the four counties in District 36 – Caroline, Cecil, Kent and Queen Anne's – have 30 days to fill the vacancy created by Senator Pipkin’s resignation. Because Sen. Pipkin was a Republican, the new Senator must be as well. Once the Central Committees review the applicants, a name will be forwarded to Gov. O'Malley for appointment, which must be done within 15 days.
The Central Committees will be accepting letters of interest until the close of business on Monday, August 19. Letters should include a statement of qualification and full contact information including mailing address, e-mail address, and phone numbers. Candidates may also include resumes. Materials should be e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org for consideration. Again, the Maryland Constitution states that only registered Republicans living in the 36 District may be considered.
"We look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in serving citizens of the 36 and encourage them to apply," said Sandy Terpeluk, Chair of the Kent County Republican Central Committee.
