Delegate Miele Introduces The Hire Our Veterans Act of 2017
Delegate Christian Miele of Baltimore County (District 8) has announced House Bill 349 - The Hire Our Veterans Act of 2017. The bill will help veterans re-enter the workforce here in Maryland upon the completion of their service to our country.
"The men and women in our armed services not only risk their lives for you, me, and our families, but sacrifice precious time away from their own families to defend our freedom here at home. The very least we can do to honor our hometown heroes is through access to opportunities for gainful employment," said Miele.
The bill incentivizes small businesses – businesses with 50 or fewer employees – to hire honorably discharged veterans in exchange for a two-year tax credit whereby the employer can claim a credit in an amount equal to 30% of up to the first $6,000 of the veteran’s wages in Year 1 of the program, and 20% of those same wages in Year 2. "The state legislature enacted a similar tax credit 10 years ago to incentivize the hiring of ex-felons, so surely we can do something similar for our men and women in uniform," wrote Miele.
The Hire Our Veterans Act not only helps our vets re-enter the workforce once their service to our country comes to an end, but allows our small businesses, which form the backbone of our economy, to invest the savings from this tax credit in new equipment or in further expanding their operations, which will in turn allow them to grow their businesses and create even more jobs downstream.
We thank Delegate Miele for introducing this bill!
